About Fairhope, AL

Fairhope, Alabama is located on the eastern side of Mobile Bay, just north of the Gulf Coast. The history of the area dates back thousands of years. Over this time, Native Americans lived in the area of Mobile Bay and thrived because of all of its abundance. This all changed in 1540 when Spanish explorers led by Hernando de Soto arrived and began displacing and killing the native population. The Spanish quickly claimed the area under its dominion and held it for around 170 years. In 1710, the French took control from their colony in Louisiana and held the area for another 50 years. Then in 1763, after the end of the French and Indian War, the British took control per the Treaty of Paris that ended the war. Britain’s reign of the region was short lived though, because 20 years later at the end of the American Revolution, the area was taken back over by the Spanish who held the region until the War of 1812, when American forces captured it, ending its centuries of European control.

Fairhope, Alabama has a unique history. The community was founded in 1894 as a “single-tax” colony. The 28 settlers who originally began the community were followers of the economist, Henry George. Under this model colony, the land was owned by the Fairhope Industrial Association, which had purchased land known as Stapleton’s Pasture. The land was divided into long-term leases, whereas the rent paid for the leases was pooled into a corporate fund, which paid all state and federal taxes, thus making it a simulated single-tax community. The idea was to keep the area free from land holding monopolies that made a profit on the purchase and selling of land. The end of the 19 th century was well known for many utopian experiments throughout the country and this community was one of them.

The single-tax colony still operates today. There are nearly 1,800 leaseholds that cover over 4,000 acres of land. The ideal of the colony was never fully realized however. Today the community has transitioned into one of the more affluent suburbs of Mobile. The local residents and fishermen of the community benefit from a natural phenomenon that the locals call the Jubilee. During this time, various marine life come into the shallow waters of Mobile Bay. Commercial and recreational fishermen can easily catch blue crabs, flounder, stingrays, and eel. The phenomenon has benefited the local fishing economy tremendously.
