About Montrose, AL

Montrose, Alabama is located in Baldwin County along Mobile Bay. Native Americans, who lived and prospered in the region of the Bay for thousands of years, originally inhabited the region. Then in 1540, Hernando de Soto led a Spanish expedition into the Bay. These Spaniards quickly killed or displaced the indigenous population and control of the region was established. The Spanish only loosely controlled the area however and the lines between Spanish West Florida and French Louisiana were often blurred. In 1710, the French moved into what is today Alabama and established control. They maintained control of the region until the end of the French and Indian War in 1763, which forced them to give the territory to the British. The British then lost the region about 20 years later when they were expelled at the end of the American Revolution. The Spanish once again took over during this time. Finally in 1814, the American army came in and took control
during the War of 1812. A few short years later, Alabama became a state in the union.

Montrose was originally named Sibley City after an early landowner in the region, Cyrus Sibley. In 1879, a post office was opened in the community and the name was officially changed. During World War II, the population of Mobile exploded as the country’s defense industry invested heavily in shipbuilding for the war. Many of the communities in the area became company towns. Montrose however remained
unincorporated and rural. The population today is only about 120 people. The community has lost almost half of its population in last 8 years. This is more than likely because of young people moving to the larger communities in the region. The average age of the community is 60 years old. This is not good news for the community as it remains to be seen what will happen in the next 20-30 years as these residents continue to age.

Things to do

The community itself is only residential. Rock Creek Golf Club is located in the community though. It is one of the area’s most pristine courses and draws players from all over the region. Even though there isn’t a lot to do in the community itself, it is however a short drive on Interstate 10 over the Bay from Mobile. Residents in the community benefit from this proximity. Just to the north of the town is Daphne,
which has multiple parks, shopping areas, and beaches. Just to the south is Oyster Bay, Gulf Shores and Orange Beaches. Residents can easily travel to all of these places in only a few minutes. This means that despite its rural atmosphere, the Alabama Gulf Coast is definitely apart of life in the community. There are several other beaches in the area too including St. Bees Beach and Village Point Park Boardwalk. There are also several places to take in nature in the surrounding area. Gator Alley Boardwalk, May Day Park, Meaher State Park, and the Blakeley State Park Nature Center are a few of the most notable. Even though the community is a quiet, residential haven, the surrounding area is lively and exciting with lots to do.
