About Prichard, AL

History

Prichard’s history begins in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The area that is now the community had remained relatively unsettled until then. The Mobile Bay area’s history is much older however. The region’s history dates back to the native inhabitants who lived in the area for thousands of years. Then in 1540, Hernando de Soto landed in the Bay and his Spanish companions began displacing and killing the native population. The region remained under Spanish control until 1710 when the French moved in and took it uncontested. The French control of the region lasted around 50 years. In 1763 the British assumed control of the area as a result of the Treaty of Paris that ended the French and Indian War. They maintained control until the second Treaty of Paris, which ended the American Revolution. This treaty gave the land back to the Spanish who controlled it until the American’s captured the territory during the War of 1812. The region has been under American control ever since.

Prichard’s population began growing after 1900. The shipbuilding and paper milling industries began moving in Mobile Bay and the workers of the industries began to settle in the community. In 1925, the city was officially incorporated. The shipbuilding foundations in the area made it an attractive place for the defense industry during World War II. It was this massive expansion of shipbuilding that brought people from all over the country to the Mobile region looking for work.

Prichard became one of the cities in the area where shipbuilding companies erected homes for their workers. The city essentially became a company town. The town went through a major demographic shift during the 1960s. The end of Alabama’s system of racial segregation happened during this time and African Americans began moving throughout the region freely. These African Americans began to move out of their segregated communities and into the downtown district, causing massive “white flight” from the community. Between 1960 and 1970, the city lost nearly 7,000 people. By 1990 it had lost nearly 7,000 more.

Today

Today the population is around 23,000. Job loss in the 1980s and 90s hit the city hard. Major companies such as Scott Paper Company and International Paper closed facilities in the area. Throughout the 1980’s the city’s office vacancy rate was almost 80 percent. The city was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1999 and has been on the rebound ever since. The office vacancy rate after 2000 has improved to 30 percent. The city is still struggling, but is making gains every year.

Things to do

Prichard is located in the Mobile metropolitan area and is only a short drive down Interstate 165 away from all that the city has to offer. One of the top attractions in the area are beaches on the Gulf and the Bay. Major beaches in the area include St. Bees Beach, Orange Beach, Gulf Shores Beach, and Dauphin Island. There are also many nature locations in the region that are great places to reconnect with the outdoors. The most well known of these nature areas is Meaher State Park.
