About Daphne, AL

History

Daphne, Alabama is a city located on the eastern side of Mobile Bay. Native Americans inhabited the land that the city currently occupies for thousands of years before Europeans first explored the bay. The first Europeans to explore the region were the Spanish. A few explorers ventured into the bay but the first to make a noticeable impact was Hernando de Soto. He set foot in Alabama in 1540 and life for the Natives went downhill from this moment.

Over the next few hundred years the land would change hands between the Spanish, French, and British several times. At first the Spanish loosely controlled the land. Their inability or unwillingness to establish firm control of the region resulted in the French taking over in 1710. The French controlled the area until 1763 when the British took control following the French and Indian War. When the British lost the
War of American Independence, they also lost their foothold in what used to be the North American colonies. The Spanish raced in and reclaimed the land. Finally the Americans invaded and took over in 1814 as apart of the War of 1812. The region has been under American control ever since, except for the few years that the Confederacy was in charge during the Civil War.

The city of Daphne was officially established in 1874, when the first post office was built. In 1888, the city saw a large influx of Italian immigrants searching for the American dream. These immigrants were looking for a more rural, agricultural lifestyle that couldn’t be found in the urban north. The city was officially incorporated in 1927 with an initial population of about 500 residents.

Today

Today the city’s population is roughly 22,000 people. The residents of the community benefit from their proximity to the city of Mobile. The most prominent professions in the community are in the education, retail, and healthcare sectors. had its ups and downs over the last century including having to rebuild from several Gulf hurricanes. The most significant of which was Hurricane Ivan that made landfall just south of the city.
